Brain Dock

What is Brain Dock?

Stroke, whether ischemic or hemorrhagic, is affecting the younger population (middle age) with increasing frequency. It is now the third cause of death and major disability in developed countries. There is also a major association between stroke and coronary artery disease, the second cause of death. Yet, traditional health assessment never includes the brain. Many risk factors lead to stroke. Some are inherited and impossible to change, e.g. race, gender and family history. But risk factors can be identified and corrected. Recent research strongly advocates the preventive approach in reducing the incidence of stroke and its devastating consequences.

Brain dock is a new concept based on prevention, screening of modifiable risk factors and early detection of brain pathology by neuro-imaging.

Modifiable risk factors:

  • Hypertension
  • Atrial fibrillation and heart disease
  • Hypercholesterolaemia
  • Smoking (cigars included)
  • Excessive alcohol intake
  • Carotid stenosis
  • Transient ischaemic attack
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Large Berry aneurysm
  • Other medical conditions –autoimmune disease and coagulation disorders

Tumours can sometimes be picked up when they are small so that they can be follow up closely, or minimal invasive treatment applied. In the elderly, chronic subdural hematoma is not uncommon. Early detection and timely treatment will ensure good outcome.
