REFERRING PHYSICIANSInformation for Referring PhysiciansGamma Knife radisourgery is a safe, effective, non-invasive treatment for patients with benign and malignant brain tumors or vascular and functional disorders of the brain. It offers hope to patients with tumors formerly considered inoperable, and to patients whose age or medical condition prevent open surgery. Patients may be eligible for Gamma Knife radiosurgery even if they previously had open brain surgery, radiation or chemotherapy, or embolization for arteriovenous malformations (AVM). Since it is non-invasive, the treatment can be an outpatient procedure, and the patients can normally return to their normal activities within a day or two. Complications are infrequent or rare compared to conventional open surgery. The most commonly reported complications are local pain or swelling at the site of the pin placement and/or headache that is resolved with over-the-counter medication. The effects and research of Gamma Knife radiosurgery is documented in over 2000 peer-reviewed medical articles. Here at TBC we have contributed with over 40 publications and to see the complete list, please go to Publications. It dramatically streamlines workflow and expands the treatable volume through an automated, multi-source collimator. System benefits include faster set-up and treatment delivery to one or more tumors in a single session, and the potential to treat lesions in the paranasal sinuses, orbits and upper cervical spine, even paraspinal metastases and laryngeal tumors. It excels in conformity, accuracy and dosimetry, while reducing residual dose to unintended areas. |
