The Brain Centre Foundation (BCF)
The BCF is a non-profit making subsidiary of The Brain Centre whose main goals are:
- Promotion of brain health and public interests in common brain diseases such as stroke, headache, brain tumors etc. The BCF has in the past conducted public education forums on stroke, headache, and Parkinson’s disease. The next project, which will be on brain tumors, is scheduled for spring 2008.
- Subsidize expensive treatments such as Deep Brain Stimulation and Gamma Knife Surgery for needy patients.
- Sponsorship of medical care and neurosurgery for Chinese orphan babies through MedArt in Hong Kong and Hope Foster Home in Beijing.
- Support research in neuroscience.

The Brain Centre Stroke Survey (BCSS)
The BCSS was commissioned by the Brain Centre and carried out in January 2001. The purpose of the survey was to assess public knowledge and awareness regarding Stroke which is the No. 3 killer in Hong Kong next to Heart Disease and Cancer and the No. 1 cause of disability in adults.
A survey on Stroke Awareness was done on behalf of the Brain Centre by the Telephone Survey Research Laboratory, the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. It was carried out on 2nd Jan, 2001 to 5th Jan, 2001. 643 successful samples of age over 18 were interviewed through telephone. 54.3% of the samples were age 20 to 40.
Major findings of the survey included :

- 94.7% of the interviewee had little or no knowledge about stroke.
- Most of them could not tell the main signs and symptoms of stroke.
- 98.8% interviewee did not know the time window - 6 hours is significant for effective stroke treatment.
- Most people did not know the effect of stroke.
- 66.4% could not recognise the symptoms if stroke occurs to themselves or their family members.
- Only 35.5% interviewee knew that stroke is a neurological disease.
- 20.4% interviewee had family member(s) had suffered from stroke.
- 65% had no practical measure to prevent stroke.
- 65.8% had no regular physical check-up.
- 75.5% seldom or never attend any seminar, read any articles, newspaper or TV programme about stroke.
- 55.9% had none or one to two hours of physical exercise per week.
- 20.7% had high stress.
- 79.9% agreed the urgency to set up a comprehensive medical institute for the treatment and prevention of stroke.
