Movement Disorder Clinic

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is one of the commonest movement disorder afflicting the older age group. The effective management of PD depends on a firm diagnosis right at the onset so that the best combination of drug therapy can be initiated to prevent disease progression and long term side effects. The initial assessment at the clinic will include a video record of the patient's motor function together with a Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) which is the most widely accepted system for scoring PD disability; this combination will form the 'baseline' whereby treatment progress can be monitored objectively. click here for related articles

For advanced cases and those with significant side effects from long term treatment, the clinic offers various surgical options including Gamma Thalamotomy and Deep Brain Stimulation.

The clinic also specializes in the assessment of other forms of movement disorders including the following:

  • tremor
  • hemifacial spasm
  • tic disorders
  • involuntary movements (dyskinesia and chorea)
  • dystonia

Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections are available for the treatment of hemifacial spasms and focal dystonias.
